Larapinta Drive
Larapinta Drive is the quintessential outback road connecting Alice Springs to the West MacDonnell Ranges and beyond, offering a dramatic journey through the heart of Australia's Red Centre. This sealed route cuts through ancient landscapes of ochre-red gorges, ghost gums, and spinifex plains, with the rugged MacDonnell Ranges as a constant companion. It's a road that demands you stop, look, and listen — to the silence, the birds, and the stories of the Arrernte people who have walked this country for tens of thousands of years. A self-drive along Larapinta Drive is an essential Northern Territory experience, best taken slowly with plenty of detours into the West MacDonnell National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A striking gap in the ranges with a permanent waterhole, home to black-footed rock-wallabies; best visited in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.
- Standley Chasm – A dramatic, narrow chasm where the walls glow fiery orange when the sun is directly overhead (around midday); a short walk leads to the heart of the cleft.
- Ochre Pits – A culturally significant site where Aboriginal people have mined ochre for ceremony and art for millennia; the layered colours of the pits are a photographer's dream.
- Ormiston Gorge & Pound – One of the West MacDonnells' most spectacular spots, with a permanent waterhole, a ghost-gum-lined creek, and excellent walking trails including the 7.5 km Ormiston Pound Walk.
- Glen Helen Gorge – At the western end of the drive, this gorge offers a swimming hole and a historic pub (Glen Helen Resort) for a cold beer with a view of the ranges.
- Alice Springs Desert Park – Just off the drive near Alice Springs, this excellent park showcases desert ecosystems and nocturnal animals, with Aboriginal cultural presentations.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least a full day for a one-way drive from Alice Springs to Glen Helen Gorge (about 130 km), with stops at every major attraction. To truly appreciate the area, spend two to three days: base yourself at Glen Helen Resort or camp at Ormiston Gorge, and explore the gorges and walks at a relaxed pace. The drive itself is only about 1.5 hours without stops, but you'll want to linger for walks, swims, and photography. If you're continuing west to Kings Canyon or Uluru, factor in an extra day for the 4WD-only sections beyond Glen Helen.
