Finke River National Park, straddling the Northern Territory’s iconic Lasseter Highway, protects one of the world’s oldest river systems. This rugged outback landscape is a dramatic contrast of ancient riverbeds, red sand dunes, and ghostly white gums. It’s a place where the silence is profound and the starry nights are unforgettable — perfect for travellers seeking an authentic desert experience away from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Finke River — Walk along the dry, sandy riverbed (which rarely flows) and marvel at the towering red cliffs and river red gums. The 2 km Finke River Walk is an easy introduction.
- Illamurta Springs Conservation Reserve — A hidden oasis with a permanent spring, birdlife, and a historic police station ruin. It’s a short detour off the highway.
- Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve — A striking 50-metre sandstone pillar rising from the desert, once a landmark for explorers and Afghan cameleers. The 4WD track is an adventure in itself.
- Stargazing — The park’s remote location offers some of the darkest skies in Australia. Bring a blanket and lie back to witness the Milky Way in all its glory.
- Birdwatching — Look for zebra finches, budgerigars, and the rare scarlet-chested parrot flitting among the desert oaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least half a day to explore the park’s main walks and viewpoints. If you’re a keen photographer or stargazer, plan an overnight stay at the basic campground (no facilities). Combine with a morning visit to Chambers Pillar and an afternoon at Illamurta Springs for a full day’s immersion in the outback. The park is best visited between April and September when temperatures are milder.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- West MacDonnell Ranges — Spectacular gorges, waterholes, and walking trails, just a 1.5-hour drive from the park.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) — A stunning sandstone canyon with the challenging Rim Walk, about 2.5 hours east via the Lasseter Highway.
- Palm Valley (Finke Gorge National Park) — A lush oasis with ancient red cabbage palms, accessible by 4WD — a unique contrast to the surrounding desert.
