Curtain Springs Roadhouse
Curtain Springs Roadhouse is a classic outback pit stop on the Lasseter Highway, roughly halfway between Uluru and Kings Canyon. It’s a no-frills but welcoming spot where red dust meets cold beer, and the silence of the desert is broken only by the hum of road trains and the chatter of travellers swapping stories. This is the heart of the Red Centre – raw, expansive, and utterly unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Outback Roadhouse Vibe: Pull up for a cold drink, a hearty meal, or a fuel top-up. The roadhouse is a genuine slice of remote Australian life, complete with a small shop and a friendly, weathered atmosphere.
- Stargazing: With virtually zero light pollution, the night sky here is a dazzling canopy of stars. Grab a chair and watch the Milky Way stretch from horizon to horizon.
- Nearby Attractions: Curtain Springs is the closest stop to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (about 100 km west) and Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) (about 200 km east). It’s also near the turn-off to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and the Mount Conner Lookout – a flat-topped mesa often mistaken for Uluru from a distance.
- Desert Walks: The surrounding spinifex plains and red dunes are perfect for a short wander. Keep an eye out for dingos, camels, and birdlife like the zebra finch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pause here for a quick 20–30 minute break to stretch legs, refuel, and grab supplies. If you’re self-driving, it’s a logical lunch stop. For a deeper experience – say, an overnight stay in the campground – allow an evening and morning to enjoy the sunset and sunrise over the desert. The roadhouse itself is compact, so a long stop isn’t needed unless you’re camping.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru & Kata Tjuta: Only an hour west, these iconic monoliths are a must. Plan a dawn or dusk visit for the colour changes.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): A two-hour drive east, offering the spectacular Rim Walk and lush Garden of Eden.
- Mount Conner: Visible from the highway, this striking mesa is worth a photo stop. A 4WD track leads closer, but it’s on private land – view from the road.
- Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort): The main service town with accommodation, dining, and cultural experiences, about 100 km west.
- Erldunda Roadhouse: Another classic outback stop on the Stuart Highway, about 200 km south – a good milestone on the drive to Adelaide.
