Arriving at Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) is your dramatic gateway to the red Centre. As you step onto the tarmac, the immense silhouette of Uluru shimmers on the horizon, immediately setting the tone for one of Australia's most profound outback experiences. This compact, modern airport is the sole commercial air hub for Yulara and the surrounding national parks, making it the seamless launchpad for your Red Centre adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- First glimpse of Uluru – The approach and landing offer jaw-dropping aerial views of the monolith; sit on the left side of the plane for the best perspective.
- Airport terminal art – The building features impressive Aboriginal art installations and interpretive displays on Anangu culture and the region's geology.
- Sunset viewing from the airport road – If you have a rental car, pull over just outside the terminal for a surprisingly uncrowded sunset view over the Kata Tjuta domes.
- Nearby Field of Light – Bruce Munro's immersive light installation is a short drive from the airport at the Ayers Rock Resort; it's a magical after-dark experience.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Just 20 minutes' drive away, the heart of the experience: base walks, cultural talks, and sunrise/sunset viewing platforms.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers fly in and spend 2–3 full days in the region. The airport itself is small – allow 30 minutes for arrivals (baggage claim is quick) and 45 minutes for departures. If you're on a tight itinerary, a day trip is possible: fly in early morning, tour Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and catch a late flight out. But to truly absorb the desert light and culture, a two-night stay is ideal, giving you time for a sunrise base walk, a visit to the Cultural Centre, and an evening under the stars.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Ayers Rock Resort (Yulara) – The accommodation and dining hub, with galleries, a town square, and stargazing tours.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A 3-hour drive away, offering the spectacular Rim Walk and lush Garden of Eden.
- Alice Springs – 4.5 hours north by road or a short flight, the outback town with the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum and the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Mount Conner (Artilla) – A flat-topped mesa often mistaken for Uluru, visible from the Lasseter Highway on the way to Kings Canyon.
