Rising from the flat desert plains of the Lasseter Highway, Mount Conner is a striking flat-topped mesa often mistaken for Uluru from a distance. This 300-metre-high sandstone monolith, also known as Artilla by the local Pitjantjatjara people, offers a less crowded but equally awe-inspiring encounter with the Red Centre's ancient geology. Its distinctive shape, like a giant tabletop, changes colour dramatically at sunrise and sunset, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple.
Highlights & What to See
- Scenic lookout from the highway: Pull over at the designated stop to photograph Mount Conner from afar – the best views are in the early morning or late afternoon light.
- Sunrise and sunset colours: Watch the rock shift from deep red to fiery orange and soft purple as the sun moves across the sky.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, dingoes, and wedge-tailed eagles that roam the surrounding spinifex plains.
- 4WD exploration (permit required): For a closer look, take a guided tour that ventures onto the private Curtin Springs Station to the base of the mesa – you'll see saltbush and mulga up close.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular – the Milky Way arcs right over the mesa.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can appreciate Mount Conner in as little as 30 minutes from the roadside lookout, but to truly soak in its grandeur, plan for a sunset visit that lasts about an hour. If you're a keen photographer or want to join a guided 4WD tour, allow half a day. Most travellers combine a stop here with a drive between Uluru and Kings Canyon.
