Rising abruptly from the flat red plains of the Lasseter Highway, the Anna Creek Sand Dunes are a striking ribbon of golden sand that seems to appear out of nowhere. These 20-metre-high dunes curve for several kilometres, offering a surreal landscape that feels more like the Sahara than the Red Centre. The contrast between the deep blue sky, the white sand, and the crimson desert floor is nothing short of spectacular, especially in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.
Highlights & What to See
- Climb the main dune for panoramic views of the surrounding spinifex plains and the distant Musgrave Ranges — a rewarding short hike that takes about 20 minutes.
- Sandboard down the slopes – bring a board or just slide on cardboard; the steep eastern face provides a thrilling ride.
- Photograph the dunes at sunrise or sunset when the sand glows orange and the shadows carve dramatic patterns across the ridges.
- Look for desert wildlife – tracks of red kangaroos, dingoes, and perentie lizards are often visible in the soft sand.
- Experience the silence – stop and listen; the stillness here is profound, broken only by the whisper of wind over the dunes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours if you just want to climb the main dune and take photos. To fully explore the dune field, try sandboarding, and soak in the atmosphere, allow 2–3 hours. The site is unstaffed and free to visit, so you can arrive and leave at your own pace. Early morning (before 9am) or late afternoon (after 4pm) are best for comfortable temperatures and the most dramatic light. If you're passing along the Lasseter Highway, it's an easy 20-minute detour.

- Yulara / Ayers Rock Resort – the main hub for accommodation, dining, and cultural experiences, 1.5 hours west.
