Watarrka National Park, best known as the home of Kings Canyon, is a dramatic desert oasis in the heart of the Red Centre. A place of towering sandstone cliffs, palm-filled gorges, and ancient rock art, it offers some of the most rewarding walks in the Northern Territory. The park's cultural significance to the Luritja people and its stunning geological formations make it an essential stop on any Lasseter Highway itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The park's signature experience – a 6km loop that climbs to the canyon rim for jaw-dropping views over the sheer cliffs and the lush Garden of Eden waterhole. Start early to avoid the heat.
- Kings Creek Walk: A gentler 2.6km stroll along the canyon floor, following a shaded creek bed to a lookout beneath the cliffs. Ideal for a shorter visit or when the heat is intense.
- Garden of Eden: A permanent waterhole surrounded by ancient cycads and ghost gums, accessible via the Rim Walk. A serene spot for a break and birdwatching.
- Kings Canyon Station: Just outside the park, this working cattle station offers cultural tours with local Aboriginal guides, camel rides, and a chance to learn about bush tucker and Dreamtime stories.
- Star Gazing: With minimal light pollution, the park is a designated Dark Sky area. The night sky here is spectacular – join a guided astronomy tour or simply lie back and marvel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to tackle the Rim Walk (allow 3-4 hours) and explore the canyon floor. If you're short on time, the Kings Creek Walk can be done in under an hour. To truly soak in the atmosphere, consider an overnight stay at Kings Canyon Resort – the sunset and sunrise light on the sandstone is unforgettable. Combine with a visit to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park for a classic Red Centre road trip.
