Erldunda is a tiny roadhouse settlement at the crossroads of the Lasseter and Stuart Highways, serving as a vital pit stop for travellers crossing the Red Centre. With the iconic silhouette of Mount Conner on the horizon, this is classic outback Australia — red dirt, endless skies, and a palpable sense of isolation. While there’s little here beyond the roadhouse, it’s an essential refuelling and resupply point, and a surprisingly good spot to stretch your legs and soak in the raw desert atmosphere.
Highlights & What to See
- Erldunda Roadhouse – The heart of the settlement, with a petrol station, basic grocery store, and a pub serving cold beer and hearty counter meals. Grab a coffee and a pie for the road.
- Emu Farm – A quirky attraction where you can see emus up close; the farm also sells emu oil products and souvenirs.
- Mount Conner views – Often mistaken for Uluru from a distance, this flat-topped mesa is a stunning sight, especially at sunrise and sunset. You can see it from the highway or on a scenic flight.
- Stargazing – With zero light pollution, the night sky here is breathtaking. Pull over anywhere safe and look up.
- Outback walking – Short walks around the roadhouse area let you experience the spinifex grasslands and red sand dunes; keep an eye out for kangaroos and wedge-tailed eagles.
Suggested Time to Spend
Erldunda is a stopover, not a destination. Most travellers spend 30 minutes to an hour refuelling and grabbing supplies. If you’re staying overnight at the roadhouse’s basic motel or campsite, you can enjoy the sunset and a quiet evening under the stars. Plan to be here either on your way to or from Uluru / Kings Canyon, and allow a full day for the drive between Alice Springs and the Rock.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yulara / Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – 200 km southwest; the main reason most people pass through Erldunda. Allow at least two days for the Rock and the Olgas.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – 300 km west via the Lasseter Highway; a spectacular canyon with the Rim Walk and Garden of Eden.
- Alice Springs – 200 km north on the Stuart Highway; the Red Centre’s hub for culture, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Mount Conner – 100 km west; you can view it from the road, or take a scenic flight from Yulara for a closer look.
- Finke Gorge National Park – 250 km northeast; home to Palm Valley, a lush oasis in the desert with ancient cycads.
