Ellery Creek Big Hole is one of the most beloved swimming holes in the West MacDonnell Ranges, just a 90-minute drive west of Alice Springs. This stunning waterhole, framed by rugged red cliffs and ghost gums, is a refreshing oasis in the arid heart of Australia. The permanent waterhole is fed by the Ellery Creek, which flows over a natural rock bar, creating a deep, cool plunge pool perfect for a dip on a hot day. The surrounding area offers short walks, picnic spots, and a chance to connect with the ancient landscapes of the Larapinta Trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming at the Big Hole – The main draw is the large, deep waterhole itself. The water is clear and refreshing, and the setting is spectacular, with high cliffs providing shade in the afternoon.
- Ellery Creek Gap Walk – A short, easy 1.5 km loop trail that follows the creek through a narrow gap in the range, offering views of the waterhole from above and a chance to spot birdlife.
- Dolomite Walk – A 1 km walk that leads to the Dolomite Pools, a series of smaller rock pools with interesting geological formations – a quieter alternative to the main hole.
- Picnicking and Camping – The area has picnic tables and a basic campground (fees apply), making it a great spot for a relaxed lunch or an overnight stay under the stars.
- Scenic Drive along Larapinta Drive – The drive itself is a highlight, passing through the West MacDonnell Ranges with opportunities to stop at other gorges and lookouts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here for a swim and a short walk, but if you want to do both walks and enjoy a picnic, allow half a day. Campers can easily spend a full day or overnight, using it as a base to explore nearby gorges. The best time to visit is in the cooler months (April to September) when the water is most inviting and the weather is pleasant for walking.
