Standley Chasm is a dramatic sandstone gorge carved through the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering one of the most photogenic walks in Central Australia. Just a 50-minute drive west of Alice Springs, this privately owned reserve delivers a quintessential outback experience with its sheer red walls that glow at midday when the sun is directly overhead.
Highlights & What to See
- The Chasm Walk – A short, easy 1.2 km return path leads through a cool creek bed lined with cycads and ferns before reaching the narrow, 80-metre-high chasm walls. Time your visit for around midday to see the walls illuminated by a shaft of sunlight.
- Angkerle Atwatye (Standley Chasm Cultural Centre) – Learn about the site’s spiritual significance to the Arrernte people through interpretive displays and local Aboriginal art. The centre also has a café and gallery.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, zebra finches and peregrine falcons along the walk.
- Photography opportunities – The chasm’s narrow opening and vibrant colours make it a favourite for landscape photographers, especially in the golden hours of early morning or late afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here: 30 minutes for the walk and another 30–60 minutes exploring the cultural centre and enjoying the café. To fully appreciate the changing light, consider arriving early and staying through the midday sun. It’s an ideal stop on a day trip from Alice Springs or as part of a longer West MacDonnell Ranges itinerary.
