Simpson Gap is a striking chasm carved through the MacDonnell Ranges, just a short drive from Alice Springs. This dramatic cleft in the rock offers a cool, shaded escape from the desert heat and is a favoured spot for walkers, rock-wallaby spotters, and photographers chasing that golden-hour light. The gap is also significant to the Arrernte people, and the permanent waterhole at its base has sustained life here for millennia.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gap itself – a sheer-sided quartzite gorge that narrows to just a few metres wide, with a permanent waterhole reflecting the red cliffs.
- Black-footed Rock-wallabies – often seen scrambling on the cliffs near the waterhole, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Simpson Gap Walk – an easy 2 km return stroll from the car park to the gap, with interpretive signage about the area's geology and Indigenous heritage.
- Birdwatching – keep an eye out for zebra finches, honeyeaters, and birds of prey soaring overhead.
- Sunset views – the cliffs glow a deep ochre as the sun dips below the horizon, making for a stunning photo opportunity.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at Simpson Gap, enough time to complete the short walk, soak in the atmosphere, and watch for wildlife. It's a perfect quick stop on a half-day drive from Alice Springs, especially combined with nearby gorges. For photographers, an early morning or late afternoon visit is ideal to catch the best light and avoid the midday heat.
