Simpson Gap is a striking chasm carved through the MacDonnell Ranges, just a short drive from Alice Springs. This dramatic cleft in the rock offers a cool, shaded escape from the desert heat and is a favoured spot for walkers, rock-wallaby spotters, and photographers chasing that golden-hour light. The gap is also significant to the Arrernte people, and the permanent waterhole at its base has sustained life here for millennia.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at Simpson Gap, enough time to complete the short walk, soak in the atmosphere, and watch for wildlife. It's a perfect quick stop on a half-day drive from Alice Springs, especially combined with nearby gorges. For photographers, an early morning or late afternoon visit is ideal to catch the best light and avoid the midday heat.
