Rim Walk is the signature experience at Kings Canyon, a dramatic chasm in Watarrka National Park. This 6km loop trail takes you up a steep climb onto the canyon rim, where you’ll walk along the edge of sheer sandstone cliffs, peer down into the lush Garden of Eden, and absorb sweeping views of the surrounding desert. It’s a challenging but rewarding hike that showcases the raw beauty of the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- The climb: The initial ‘Heartbreak Hill’ is a steep set of stairs, but the 360-degree views from the top are worth every step.
- The Lost City: A series of weathered sandstone domes that resemble a ruined ancient city.
- The Garden of Eden: A permanent waterhole surrounded by lush cycads and ferns, offering a surprising oasis in the arid landscape.
- Kings Creek views: Look down into the canyon where Kings Creek winds through the valley floor.
- Sunrise and sunset: The canyon walls glow with rich reds and oranges; consider timing your walk for early morning or late afternoon.
- Birdwatching: Spot zebra finches, spinifex pigeons, and peregrine falcons along the rim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 3–4 hours for the full Rim Walk, including time to rest and take photos. Most hikers start early (before 8am) to avoid the midday heat, especially between October and March. The walk is moderately strenuous, so carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person and wear sturdy shoes. If you’re short on time or prefer a gentler option, the shorter Kings Creek Walk (1 hour return) follows the canyon floor.
