Kings Creek is the gateway to Watarrka National Park and the dramatic Kings Canyon, offering a serene desert oasis with a permanent waterhole, lush vegetation, and a peaceful campground. This remote spot, about 450km southwest of Alice Springs, is a perfect base for exploring the canyon's rim walks and ancient rock formations.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – A 6km loop that climbs to the canyon rim for jaw-dropping views of 300m-high sandstone cliffs, the 'Lost City' domes, and the lush Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Kings Creek Walk – An easier 2.6km stroll along the sandy creek bed, shaded by river red gums and ending at a viewing platform with canyon vistas.
- Kings Creek Waterhole – A permanent waterhole perfect for a cool dip (check local conditions) and a picnic spot surrounded by cycads and ghost gums.
- Helicopter Scenic Flights – Book a flight from Kings Creek Station for an aerial perspective of the canyon, the George Gill Range, and the vast outback.
- Sunset Viewing – Watch the sandstone walls glow red and orange from the canyon rim or the nearby sunset viewing platform.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two nights at Kings Creek to comfortably tackle the Kings Canyon Rim Walk (allow 3–4 hours) and enjoy a second day for a helicopter flight or a slower creek walk. If you're short on time, a one-night stop lets you do the rim walk at sunrise and depart by midday. The best months are April to September to avoid extreme heat.

- Alice Springs – A 4.5-hour drive northeast, the outback hub with the West MacDonnell Ranges, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the Desert Park.
- Finke Gorge National Park – About 2 hours east, featuring the ancient Palm Valley with rare red cabbage palms and 4WD tracks.
