Kings Creek Walk is a gentle, family-friendly trail that winds along the base of the towering red cliffs of Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park. Unlike the more strenuous Rim Walk, this paved path offers a serene stroll through ancient cycads and lush vegetation, with the canyon walls rising dramatically above you. The walk culminates at a shaded viewing platform where you can admire the sheer scale of the sandstone escarpment and listen to the calls of birds echoing off the rock. It’s a perfect introduction to the geology and ecology of the region, accessible to most fitness levels and especially rewarding in the soft light of late afternoon.
Highlights & What to See
- Ancient Cycads: The path passes through a grove of rare cycads, living fossils that have thrived here for millions of years — a striking contrast to the arid surrounds.
- Viewing Platform at the End: The walk ends at a broad platform with benches, offering a front-row seat to the canyon’s immense walls and the intricate patterns of the rock layers.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies and a variety of birds, including the striking red-tailed black cockatoo, which often fly overhead.
- Geological Story: Interpretive signs along the way explain how the canyon was formed over hundreds of millions of years, from ancient seabed to desert landscape.
- Sunset Views: The walk is particularly magical during the golden hour, when the cliffs glow in shades of ochre and amber.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow around 1 to 1.5 hours for the 2.6 km return walk, including time to sit and soak in the views at the platform. Most visitors do this as a gentle morning or late-afternoon outing, often pairing it with the more demanding Rim Walk (which takes 3–4 hours) earlier in the day. If you’re short on time, the Kings Creek Walk alone is a rewarding taste of the canyon’s grandeur and can be done in under an hour.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The iconic 6 km loop along the canyon rim, offering breathtaking panoramas and the Garden of Eden waterhole — a must for fit hikers.

- Kings Canyon Resort: The closest accommodation and dining, with a swimming pool and sunset viewing area — ideal for an overnight stay.
- Kathleen Springs Walk: An easy 2.6 km walk in the southern part of the park, leading to a tranquil waterhole with cultural significance.
- Uluru & Kata Tjuta: About 3 hours’ drive away, these iconic monoliths are easily combined into a longer Red Centre itinerary.
