Coonawarra is a tiny, sun-bleached settlement on the edge of Watarrka National Park, best known as the launchpad for the epic Kings Canyon Rim Walk. This remote outpost offers a genuine outback experience with a striking red-rock landscape, a stark contrast to the lush vineyards of its South Australian namesake. It’s a place where the silence is profound and the stars blaze overhead, making it a memorable stop on any Red Centre itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The main event—a 6km loop that climbs to the canyon rim, offering jaw-dropping views of weathered sandstone domes (the 'Lost City'), sheer cliffs plunging into palm-filled chasms, and the permanent waterhole known as the Garden of Eden. Start early to beat the heat.
- Kings Creek Station: A working cattle station that offers quad bike tours, helicopter flights over the canyon, and camel rides. It’s a great place to get a taste of outback station life.
- Watarrka National Park: Beyond the canyon, explore the park's lesser-known walks, like the Kathleen Springs Walk (an easy 2.6km stroll to a waterhole) or the Giles Track (a multi-day hike). Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies and birdlife.
- Sunset Viewing: Head to the Kings Canyon Resort lookout for spectacular sunset colours over the George Gill Range. The changing light on the sandstone is magical.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate one full day to Coonawarra, arriving the afternoon before and tackling the Kings Canyon Rim Walk early the next morning. The walk itself takes 3–4 hours, and you’ll want another hour or two for optional activities like a scenic flight or a dip in the resort pool. If you’re short on time, you can drive from Alice Springs (about 4.5 hours) and do the walk in a long day, but an overnight stay is far more rewarding, especially for the stargazing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: A 3-hour drive south, this is the iconic heart of the Red Centre, with Uluru and the domes of Kata Tjuta. Combine both parks for a classic outback road trip.
- Alice Springs: The gateway to the Red Centre, 4.5 hours east, offers cultural insights at the Alice Springs Desert Park and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: A scenic drive west of Alice Springs, featuring gorges like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Gorge, perfect for swimming and hiking.
- Finke Gorge National Park: About 2 hours south of Alice, home to the ancient Palm Valley, a lush oasis with cycads and palms.
