Coober Pedy, a remote opal-mining town in South Australia, is unlike anywhere else on earth. Known as the 'opal capital of the world,' this stark, sun-blasted landscape is dotted with mullock heaps and underground homes (dugouts) that offer respite from the scorching heat. The town’s quirky, frontier spirit and lunar-like scenery make it a must-stop for adventurous travellers driving the Stuart Highway.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Spend at least one full day and one night to soak up Coober Pedy’s unique atmosphere. Arrive early to join a morning mine tour, then explore the Breakaways and underground sights in the afternoon. Stay overnight in an underground hotel or motel for the full experience. If you’re on a tight schedule, a half-day stop (4–5 hours) is enough for a quick mine tour and a drive to the Breakaways.
