Coober Pedy, a remote opal-mining town in South Australia, is unlike anywhere else on earth. Known as the 'opal capital of the world,' this stark, sun-blasted landscape is dotted with mullock heaps and underground homes (dugouts) that offer respite from the scorching heat. The town’s quirky, frontier spirit and lunar-like scenery make it a must-stop for adventurous travellers driving the Stuart Highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Underground houses & churches: Tour a dugout home and visit the Serbian Orthodox Church, carved entirely underground, to see how locals beat the heat.
- Opal mines & fossicking: Go on a mine tour or try your luck at a designated fossicking area – you might just find a glint of precious opal.
- Coober Pedy Golf Course: Play a round on the world’s only dirt golf course, where you carry a square of astroturf to tee off from.
- Breakaways Reserve: Explore the colourful, eroded mesa formations and salt pans that look like a movie set – in fact, they were used in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
- Dog Fence & moon plains: Drive to the iconic Dog Fence and gaze across the vast, treeless plains that feel otherworldly, especially at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least one full day and one night to soak up Coober Pedy’s unique atmosphere. Arrive early to join a morning mine tour, then explore the Breakaways and underground sights in the afternoon. Stay overnight in an underground hotel or motel for the full experience. If you’re on a tight schedule, a half-day stop (4–5 hours) is enough for a quick mine tour and a drive to the Breakaways.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- William Creek: Australia’s smallest town, a classic outback pub stop 200 km south.
- Lake Eyre: When it floods, this vast salt lake becomes a bird haven; scenic flights operate from Coober Pedy.
- Oodnadatta Track: A historic outback route past ruins and artesian springs, linking to the old Ghan railway.
- Uluru & Kings Canyon: Both are a day’s drive north, making Coober Pedy a logical overnight on the way to the Red Centre.
