In the red heart of Australia, Birdsville is a remote outpost that punches well above its weight. This tiny town on the edge of the Simpson Desert is famous for its iconic pub, legendary race meeting, and the vast, silent landscapes that surround it. It’s a place where the outback sky stretches forever and the sense of isolation is both humbling and exhilarating.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdsville Hotel – An outback institution, this historic pub is the social heart of town. Grab a cold beer on the verandah and soak up the stories from travellers, locals, and stockmen.
- Birdsville Races – If you’re here in September, the annual Birdsville Races transform the town into a vibrant outback carnival, attracting thousands for a weekend of horse racing, live music, and dusty fun.
- Simpson Desert – The gateway to one of Australia’s most iconic 4WD destinations. Even a short drive into the desert’s edge gives you a taste of its red dunes, gibber plains, and stark beauty.
- Birdsville Track – One of Australia’s great outback drives, this 500 km dirt road from Marree is an adventure in itself, passing through remote stations and the historic Mungerannie Hotel.
- Birdsville Cemetery – A poignant reminder of the hardships of outback life, with graves dating back to the 1880s, including those of Afghan cameleers and early settlers.
- Big Red – The first of the Simpson Desert’s massive sand dunes, just 35 km west of town. Climb it for a spectacular sunset view over the desert.
Suggested Time to Spend
Birdsville is a destination in itself, but most travellers spend one or two nights here as part of a longer outback loop. If you’re just passing through, half a day is enough to explore the town, have a beer at the pub, and visit the cemetery. For a deeper experience – including driving part of the Simpson Desert or the Birdsville Track – allow at least two days. The best time to visit is April to September, when temperatures are milder and the races are on.
