Stretching 772 metres into the deep blue waters of Rivoli Bay, the Beachport Jetty is one of South Australia’s longest and most atmospheric piers. Built in 1880 from local timber and later reinforced with concrete, this historic jetty once bustled with wool and grain exports. Today it offers a mesmerising walk over the sea, superb fishing, and a front-row seat to dramatic coastal sunsets. The jetty’s timber piles are encrusted with oysters and barnacles, attracting schools of fish and making it a favourite for anglers. Don’t miss the quirky sight of the old jetty crane, a relic from the days when cargo was hoisted onto ships.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk to the End: The full 772-metre stroll feels like walking on water, with panoramic views of the Southern Ocean and the Coorong’s sand dunes.
- Fishing from the Jetty: Drop a line for whiting, mullet, salmon trout and tommy ruff – no boat needed, and the jetty is lit for night fishing.
- Historic Crane & Interpretive Signs: Learn about the jetty’s 19th-century role as a bustling port for the region’s pastoral industry.
- Swimming & Snorkelling: The sheltered side of the jetty offers calm, clear water perfect for a dip; keep an eye out for stingrays and blue devils.
- Sunset Views: The jetty faces west, making it an unbeatable spot to watch the sun sink into the ocean.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for a relaxed visit: 20 minutes to walk to the end and back, plus extra time for fishing, photography or a swim. If you’re an avid angler, plan for half a day – the jetty is productive at dawn and dusk. Combine with a beach picnic or a coffee at the nearby Beachport General Store to round out the experience.
