Mataranka
Mataranka is a tiny outback town that packs a big punch with its stunning thermal springs and deep Indigenous history. Nestled in the Northern Territory's Top End, it's the kind of place where you slow down to the rhythm of the bush, soak in warm, crystal-clear waters, and connect with the land's ancient stories. The town itself is unassuming, but the surrounding landscape—palm-fringed waterholes and rugged bush—feels like a hidden oasis. For travellers on the Stuart Highway, Mataranka is a refreshing detour that offers a genuine taste of the outback's natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitter Springs – A series of crystal-clear thermal pools set among paperbark trees and pandanus palms. Float downstream in the warm, buoyant water for a blissful, lazy afternoon.
- Mataranka Thermal Pool – Located in Elsey National Park, this larger, more developed pool is perfect for swimming and picnicking. The water stays a constant 34°C year-round.
- Elsey National Park – Beyond the springs, explore walking trails through monsoon forests and along the Roper River. Look for birdlife and wallabies at dawn and dusk.
- Rainbow Spring – A quieter, more secluded thermal spring with vibrant blue-green water. It's a short walk from the main road and offers a serene soak away from crowds.
- Mataranka Homestead & Stockyard Gallery – Step back in time at this historic homestead, which features a museum, art gallery, and the famous 'Never Never' bar, named after Jeannie Gunn's novel 'We of the Never Never'.
- Indigenous Rock Art Sites – The area is rich in Jawoyn and Mangarrayi cultural heritage. Look for guided tours that visit ancient rock art sites in the surrounding hills.
Suggested Time to Spend
Mataranka is best enjoyed as a leisurely stopover of one to two days. Most visitors spend a few hours soaking in the thermal springs, but a full day allows you to explore Elsey National Park's walking trails and enjoy a picnic lunch. If you're self-driving the Stuart Highway, plan to arrive by mid-afternoon, soak in the springs at sunset, and stay overnight at the caravan park or homestead. An extra morning gives you time to visit Rainbow Spring and the homestead museum before hitting the road.
