Just a short walk from the centre of Katherine, the Katherine Hot Springs offer a sublime natural soak in crystal-clear, thermally heated water. Surrounded by paperbark trees and lush tropical vegetation, this series of spring-fed pools maintains a constant temperature of around 30–32°C year-round. It's a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the outback, and because it's free and open 24/7, you can visit at dawn to have the pools almost to yourself.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Pool – The largest and most accessible pool, with a sandy bottom and gentle current, ideal for floating and relaxing.
- Upper Pools – A short scramble upstream leads to smaller, more secluded pools where you can enjoy a quieter soak surrounded by pandanus palms.
- Night Swimming – The springs are lit after dark, offering a magical experience under the stars; bring a torch for the path.
- Picnic Area – Shaded tables and grassy banks make it easy to turn a soak into a full afternoon outing.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, combining a swim with a picnic or a short walk along the Katherine River. If you're a keen swimmer, allow up to half a day to explore both the main and upper pools. The springs are a fantastic stop for a refreshing break on a self-drive itinerary through the Top End.
