Maguk (also known as Barramundi Gorge) is one of Kakadu's most idyllic swimming holes, tucked away at the end of a 1 km walk through monsoon forest. The plunge pool at the base of a cascading waterfall is surrounded by towering paperbark trees and sandstone cliffs, creating a serene oasis that feels a world away from the park's more famous sites. The water is clear, cool, and deep enough for a proper swim – just keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles (they're usually harmless, but always check the signs).
Highlights & What to See
- Plunge pool & waterfall – The main attraction: a deep, emerald pool fed by a gentle cascade. Perfect for a refreshing dip after the short walk.
- Monsoon forest walk – The 1 km (return) trail winds through lush vegetation, with pandanus palms and cycads providing shade. Listen for birds and the rustle of monitor lizards.
- Birdwatching – Look for rainbow bee-eaters, azure kingfishers, and white-bellied sea eagles soaring overhead.
- Scenic picnic spot – There are basic picnic tables near the car park; pack lunch and enjoy the tranquillity before or after your swim.
- Photography – Early morning or late afternoon light casts a golden glow on the escarpment and water – bring a polariser for the reflections.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1.5–2 hours at Maguk, which includes the walk, a swim, and a short break. If you're keen on photography or birdwatching, allow up to 3 hours. The site is best visited in the dry season (May–October) when the road is accessible and the water is safe for swimming. Arrive early (before 10 am) to avoid crowds and secure a parking spot.
