Gunlom, also known as Gunlom Falls or Maguk, is a stunning natural plunge pool set in the heart of Kakadu National Park. This iconic waterhole, fed by a cascading waterfall, offers a refreshing swim with panoramic views over the surrounding escarpments. It's a quintessential Top End experience, best visited during the dry season when the water is crystal clear and the weather is perfect for a dip.
Highlights & What to See
- Plunge Pool & Waterfall: The main attraction is the large, deep pool at the base of the falls, perfect for swimming. Climb to the top of the falls for a breathtaking view across the park.
- Lookout Walk: A short but steep climb (around 1 km) leads to a lookout with sweeping vistas of the Arnhem Land escarpment and the surrounding woodland.
- Birdwatching: The area is rich in birdlife, including rainbow bee-eaters, kingfishers, and white-bellied sea eagles. Bring binoculars for close-ups.
- Picnic Area: A shaded picnic spot with tables and a grassy area makes for a great lunch stop. Pack a picnic and enjoy the serenity.
- Cultural Significance: Gunlom is part of the traditional lands of the Bininj/Mungguy people. Respect the site and learn about its cultural importance through interpretive signs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day (3–4 hours) to fully enjoy Gunlom. This allows time for the walk to the lookout, a swim in the pool, and a relaxing picnic. If you're combining it with other Kakadu highlights like Yellow Water Billabong or Ubirr, consider making it a full day. Arrive early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds, especially during peak season (June–August).
