Ormiston Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre carved into the red quartzite of the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 130 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Its permanent waterhole, flanked by ghost gums and sheer cliffs, is one of the most photogenic swimming spots in the Red Centre. The gorge is a highlight of the Larapinta Trail and offers a quintessential Outback experience: cool water, ancient geology, and the silence of the desert.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge Waterhole – The main pool is perfect for a refreshing dip year-round; the reflections of the red cliffs at dawn are unforgettable.
- Ghost Gum Walk – A short, easy trail (1.5 km loop) that leads to a viewpoint over the gorge and the iconic white-barked ghost gums made famous by Albert Namatjira’s paintings.
- Pound Walk – A more challenging 7.5 km circuit that climbs to a lookout over the entire “pound” (the enclosed basin) and then descends through the gorge floor – allow 3–4 hours.
- Larapinta Trail Section – Walkers can tackle a day section of this world-class long-distance trail, which passes through the gorge; the trailhead is at the car park.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, perenties (goannas), and a variety of desert birds around the waterhole.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, which is enough for the Ghost Gum Walk and a swim. If you’re keen on the Pound Walk or a longer Larapinta day-hike, plan for a half-day (4–5 hours). The gorge is also a wonderful spot for a picnic lunch, so consider bringing supplies. To avoid the midday heat, aim for early morning or late afternoon – the light on the cliffs is spectacular.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ochre Pits – A short drive east, these ancient ochre deposits were used by Aboriginal people for ceremonial painting; the colours in the cliff face are striking.
- Glen Helen Gorge – 10 km west, another beautiful gorge with a permanent waterhole and a lodge for meals or accommodation.
- Serpentine Gorge – A narrow, shaded gorge with a lookout over the ranges, about 20 km east of Ormiston.
- Standley Chasm – Further east (about 50 km), this narrow chasm is best visited around midday when sunlight penetrates the walls.
- Alice Springs – The regional hub (130 km east) offers supplies, the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum, and the Alice Springs Desert Park.
