Finke (Aputula) is a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory's red centre, sitting on the edge of the Finke River – one of the world's oldest river systems. This is the heart of Arrernte country, where ancient desert landscapes meet living Indigenous culture. Travellers come for the raw outback experience, the nearby Finke Gorge National Park, and the chance to understand a way of life that has endured for millennia.
Highlights & What to See
- Finke Gorge National Park – Explore the dramatic Palm Valley, home to the rare red cabbage palm, and hike through ancient sandstone gorges carved by the Finke River.
- Aputula Aboriginal Community – Visit the local art centre to see authentic Indigenous artworks and learn about Arrernte culture (permission required; check with the park office).
- Finke River – Walk along the dry riverbed (most of the year) and marvel at the geological history of this ancient watercourse.
- Four-wheel driving – The unsealed roads to Finke and through the national park are a classic outback 4WD adventure, with stunning desert scenery.
- Stargazing – Far from city lights, the night sky here is jaw-dropping – perfect for spotting the Milky Way and southern constellations.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to explore Finke Gorge National Park and the community. Most visitors combine it with a 4WD loop from Alice Springs, allowing 2–3 days to travel the Finke River route (including overnight camping). The park is best visited in the dry season (April–October); summer heat can be extreme.
