Stretching west from Alice Springs for over 200 kilometres, the Western Macdonnell Ranges are a rugged spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges and ghost-gum-lined waterholes. This is the Red Centre at its most dramatic — a landscape of fiery sunsets, billion-year-old geology and quiet pockets of permanent water that have sustained Arrernte people for millennia. The region feels raw and untamed, yet remains easily accessible by sealed road, making it a must-do for any self-drive itinerary through the Northern Territory.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge — a spectacular natural amphitheatre with a permanent waterhole perfect for a refreshing swim; the 7.5 km Pound Walk offers sweeping views over the gorge's rock walls.
- Glen Helen Gorge — where the Finke River cuts through the ranges, creating a serene waterhole that glows gold at sunset; the adjacent Glen Helen Resort serves cold beer with a view.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole — a deep, ochre-tinted swimming hole flanked by red cliffs and shady river red gums; one of the best spots to cool off after a hike.
- Serpentine Gorge — a narrow, winding gorge with a lookout that rewards with panoramic views over the surrounding ranges, best visited in the soft light of late afternoon.
- Standley Chasm — a narrow cleft in the rock where the walls soar 80 metres high; at midday, sunlight filters down, illuminating the chasm in fiery orange.
- Larapinta Trail — for serious walkers, this world-class 223 km trail traverses the spine of the West MacDonnells; even a short day-walk from any gorge gives a taste of its grandeur.
Suggested Time to Spend
To do justice to the Western Macdonnell Ranges, allow at least a full day — ideally two. With a single day, you can comfortably visit three or four gorges, stopping for a swim and a short walk at each. If you have two days, consider an overnight at the Glen Helen Resort or a designated campground, which lets you catch sunrise at one gorge and sunset at another. The ranges are easily strung together as a day trip from Alice Springs (about 90 minutes to the western end), but staying overnight immerses you in the outback quiet and star-filled skies.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs — the gateway to the region, with the excellent Araluen Cultural Precinct and the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum.
- Finke Gorge National Park — home to Palm Valley, a lush oasis of ancient cycads and red cabbage palms, accessible via a 4WD track from Hermannsburg.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) — about three hours west, offering the spectacular Rim Walk and a dramatic desert canyon.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park — five hours further west, but easily combined into a longer Red Centre road trip via the Lasseter Highway.
- Simpsons Gap — a shorter, easily accessible gap on the eastern edge of the ranges, perfect for a quick stop or a short bike ride.
