Western Macdonnell Ranges

Stretching west from Alice Springs for over 200 kilometres, the Western Macdonnell Ranges are a rugged spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges and ghost-gum-lined waterholes. This is the Red Centre at its most dramatic — a landscape of fiery sunsets, billion-year-old geology and quiet pockets of permanent water that have sustained Arrernte people for millennia. The region feels raw and untamed, yet remains easily accessible by sealed road, making it a must-do for any self-drive itinerary through the Northern Territory.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To do justice to the Western Macdonnell Ranges, allow at least a full day — ideally two. With a single day, you can comfortably visit three or four gorges, stopping for a swim and a short walk at each. If you have two days, consider an overnight at the Glen Helen Resort or a designated campground, which lets you catch sunrise at one gorge and sunset at another. The ranges are easily strung together as a day trip from Alice Springs (about 90 minutes to the western end), but staying overnight immerses you in the outback quiet and star-filled skies.
