Standley Chasm is a dramatic geological cleft in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs. The sheer quartzite walls rise up to 80 metres high, narrowing to just a few metres wide at the base. The chasm is at its most photogenic around midday, when the sun is directly overhead and floods the floor with brilliant light. The site is privately owned by the local Iwupataka community, and a small entry fee supports their land management.

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–1.5 hours at Standley Chasm, including the walk and time for photos. If you want to enjoy the midday light, plan to arrive around 11 am and stay until 1 pm. Combine it with other West MacDonnell attractions like Simpsons Gap or Ellery Creek Big Hole for a full day out from Alice Springs.
