Ormiston Gorge is a stunning natural amphitheatre carved into the red quartzite cliffs of the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 135 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Its permanent waterhole, shaded by ghost gums, is the centrepiece of a landscape that feels both ancient and alive. This is a place for walking, swimming, and absorbing the raw beauty of the Central Australian outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A 7–8 km circuit that climbs to a lookout over the gorge and then descends into a natural amphitheatre enclosed by rugged cliffs. The panoramic views of the red ranges and spinifex plains are unforgettable.
- Ghost Gum Walk – A shorter, easier 1.5 km loop that takes you past the iconic white-trunked ghost gums and along the waterhole. Ideal for birdwatching and photography.
- Swimming at the Waterhole – The deep, cool waterhole is a welcome relief on a hot day. Surrounded by towering cliffs, it’s one of the best spots for a dip in the region.
- Lookout Walk – A steep but short climb (300 m) to a platform overlooking the gorge and the waterhole. Perfect for sunrise or sunset photography.
- Wildlife Spotting – Look for black-footed rock wallabies, perentie lizards, and a variety of birds including zebra finches and honeyeaters.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (4–5 hours) at Ormiston Gorge, which allows time for the Pound Walk and a swim. If you’re short on time, the Ghost Gum Walk and a dip can be done in 1.5–2 hours. To fully appreciate the area, consider arriving early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy the best light.
