Serpentine Gorge, part of the West MacDonnell Ranges, is a narrow, serpentine chasm carved through ancient quartzite. The walk to the lookout offers sweeping views of the rugged landscape, while the permanent waterhole at the gorge mouth is a serene spot for reflection. This is quintessential Red Centre scenery — stark, ancient, and deeply quiet.
Highlights & What to See
- Serpentine Gorge Lookout Walk – A short but steep 1.3 km return climb to a panoramic viewpoint over the gorge and surrounding ranges. Best done in the early morning or late afternoon for the dramatic light.
- Waterhole – At the entrance of the gorge, a permanent waterhole often reflects the red cliffs. It’s a key refuge for local wildlife, including black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn and dusk.
- Geology – The gorge’s narrow, twisting shape was carved through Heavitree Quartzite, and the walls reveal striking folds and fault lines. Geology enthusiasts will appreciate the visible cross-bedding in the rock layers.
- Birdwatching – The waterhole attracts zebra finches, spinifex pigeons, and occasional peregrine falcons. Listen for the distinctive call of the ringneck parrot echoing through the gorge.
- Photography – The contrast between the deep red cliffs, blue sky, and green river red gums makes for classic outback shots. The lookout at sunset is especially rewarding.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for the lookout walk and time to sit by the waterhole. The walk itself takes about 30–40 minutes return, but you’ll want extra time to absorb the stillness. Combine it with a half-day exploring other West MacDonnell gaps and gorges — Serpentine Gorge is often less crowded than nearby Ormiston or Glen Helen, making it a peaceful stop on a self-drive itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ormiston Gorge & Pound – A spectacular amphitheatre of rock with a permanent waterhole and excellent walking trails, including the 7.5 km Pound Walk.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A wide, dramatic gorge with a large waterhole and a historic homestead that now serves as a pub and accommodation.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, vertical cleft in the range, best visited around midday when sunlight illuminates the red walls.
- Alice Springs – The regional hub, about 90 minutes east, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum, Alice Springs Desert Park, and the Telegraph Station Historical Reserve.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Home to Palm Valley, a lush oasis of ancient palms and cycads, accessible by 4WD.
