Lake Mary Ann is a serene, seasonal lake nestled within the rugged landscapes of Finke Gorge National Park, about 130 km west of Alice Springs. This ephemeral waterhole, fed by the Finke River, is a vital oasis in the arid Central Australian desert, attracting birdlife and offering a peaceful spot for reflection. The surrounding red sandstone cliffs and ghost gums create a striking contrast against the water, making it a photographer's dream, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least half a day to fully appreciate Lake Mary Ann and its surroundings. If you're coming from Alice Springs, allocate a full day for the round trip and exploration. The lake is best visited after rains (typically November to March) when the water is present; during dry periods it may be a dry basin, but the landscape still impresses. Combine your visit with Palm Valley to make the most of the 4WD journey into Finke Gorge National Park.
