Katherine Outback Experience is a quintessential Northern Territory attraction that brings the rugged spirit of the Australian outback to life. Run by champion horseman Tom Curtain, this working farm and show offers an authentic, hands-on glimpse into station life, horse training, and working dog demonstrations. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Katherine region, it’s a must for anyone wanting to understand the real outback beyond the postcards.
Highlights & What to See
- Horse Training Demonstration – Watch Tom Curtain and his team break in young horses using patient, low-stress methods; the bond between horse and handler is mesmerising.
- Working Dog Show – See kelpies and border collies round up cattle with incredible precision and enthusiasm; it’s both educational and highly entertaining.
- Live Music & Bush Poetry – Tom Curtain is also a Golden Guitar-winning musician; the show often ends with a campfire-style concert of original outback songs and poems.
- Station Walk & Animal Encounters – Explore the farmstead, meet goats, horses, and chickens, and learn about sustainable outback living.
- Bush Tucker Tasting – Sample native ingredients like lemon myrtle and wattleseed, with insights into Indigenous food traditions.
