Kali Kala Lookout

Perched on the edge of the ancient Finke Gorge, Kali Kala Lookout offers one of the most extraordinary views in the Red Centre. Named after the Western Arrernte word for the area, this lookout peers over the palm-lined Finke River—claimed to be one of the world's oldest river systems—as it winds through rust-red sandstone cliffs and rugged river gums. The scene is a dramatic tapestry of desert colours, especially in the soft light of sunrise or sunset, when the gorge glows in shades of ochre and burnt orange.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at the lookout itself, soaking in the views and snapping photos. However, to truly appreciate the area, plan for a half-day trip that includes the drive along the unsealed road from Hermannsburg (allow 45 minutes each way) and a walk into Palm Valley. If you're a keen hiker, combine the lookout with the Palm Valley walking track (2–3 hours) for a deeper immersion. Aim to arrive at least an hour before sunset to catch the best light.
