Kalarranga Viewpoint

Perched on the western rim of the ancient Finke Gorge, Kalarranga Viewpoint delivers one of the Red Centre’s most arresting panoramas. From this elevated sandstone platform, you gaze across the meandering Finke River — one of the world’s oldest waterways — as it carves its way through the rust-coloured gorge. The viewpoint is a sacred site for the local Arrernte people, and the sense of deep time is palpable. It’s a short, rewarding walk from the car park, and the play of light at sunrise or sunset transforms the landscape into a painter’s palette of ochre, amber and shadow.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at the viewpoint, allowing time for photos and soaking in the scenery. For photographers, plan to arrive 45 minutes before sunrise or sunset to secure a spot and capture the changing light. If you’re combining it with a walk to Palm Valley, allocate at least half a day for the entire Finke Gorge experience.
