Finke Gorge National Park
Deep in the Red Centre, Finke Gorge National Park is a rugged oasis of ancient cycads, red sandstone cliffs, and the Finke River – one of the world's oldest river systems. This is the heart of Arrernte country, where the landscape tells stories of Dreamtime and the desert’s raw beauty. A 4WD is essential to reach the park, but the reward is solitude and a sense of discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Palm Valley – A lush, hidden valley filled with the rare Livistona mariae palms, some over 1000 years old. The 4WD track is an adventure in itself, winding through rocky creek beds.
- Finke River – Often a dry sandy bed, but after rains it flows with life. Walk along its course to see ancient river red gums and waterholes.
- Kalarranga Lookout – A short walk to a viewpoint overlooking the gorge’s layered sandstone walls and the river below.
- Arrernte Rock Art – Look for ochre paintings and grinding grooves near the river, evidence of thousands of years of Aboriginal habitation.
- Desert Wildlife – Spot red kangaroos, dingoes, and a dazzling array of birds like the crimson chat and zebra finch, especially near waterholes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day to explore the park properly. The drive from Alice Springs (about 135 km) takes 2–3 hours on the unsealed road, so set out early. Spend the morning on the Palm Valley 4WD track and walks, then enjoy a picnic lunch at the Kalarranga Lookout. Afternoon is perfect for a gentle walk along the Finke River. If you have a second day, consider camping overnight at the basic campground to experience the desert sunset and starry night sky.
