Stretching for 161 kilometres west of Alice Springs, West Macdonnell National Park is a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, gaping chasms and permanent waterholes. The park offers some of the Red Centre’s most accessible yet awe-inspiring landscapes, from the ochre walls of Ormiston Gorge to the hauntingly narrow Standley Chasm. This is country that demands slow exploration – stop at every lookout, walk every short trail, and feel the deep time embedded in the rock.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge & Pound: The park’s centrepiece – a sweeping amphitheatre of red rock with a permanent waterhole. The 7.5 km Pound Walk circles the entire formation and is one of the Territory’s best day walks.
- Standley Chasm: A sheer 80-metre-high cleft in the rock, best seen at midday when sunlight floods the narrow floor. It’s privately run but well worth the entry fee for the short, dramatic walk.
- Simpsons Gap: A photogenic gap in the range with a permanent waterhole and resident black-footed rock-wallabies. Easy walk, great for sunset.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole: A deep, cool swimming hole flanked by high red cliffs – a perfect spot to escape the heat mid-afternoon.
- Serpentine Gorge & Chalet Lookout: A short walk leads to a serene waterhole, while the lookout climb offers panoramic views over the entire range.
- Ghost Gum Lookout & Larapinta Drive: Stop at the many scenic pull-offs along Larapinta Drive and Namatjira Drive for classic outback vistas and ancient ghost gums clinging to cliffs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Devote at least two full days to do the park justice. Day one can cover the eastern highlights (Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek) with a swim at Ormiston Gorge late afternoon. Day two heads further west to explore Ormiston Pound on foot, then continues to Serpentine Gorge and the quieter western end. If you have only one day, focus on Ormiston Gorge and Standley Chasm – but you’ll want to come back.
