Watarrka National Park, home to the iconic Kings Canyon, is a dramatic desert landscape of sheer sandstone cliffs, palm-filled gorges, and ancient domed rock formations. Located about 450 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, this park offers some of the most spectacular hiking in the Red Centre. The contrast of lush vegetation clinging to the gorge floors against the stark, sun-baked plateau is unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – A 6-kilometre circuit that climbs to the top of the canyon, offering jaw-dropping views across the chasm and the surrounding desert. The trail passes the 'Lost City', a maze of weathered sandstone domes, and the serene 'Garden of Eden' waterhole.
- Kings Creek Walk – A gentler 2.6-kilometre return walk along the creek bed, shaded by ghost gums and cycads, leading to a lookout at the canyon's mouth.
- Kings Canyon itself – From the car park, the sheer scale of the 100-metre-high cliffs is awe-inspiring. Sunset light paints the rock in fiery oranges and reds.
- Aboriginal culture – The park is part of the traditional lands of the Luritja people. Look for interpretive signs and consider joining a guided tour to learn about bush foods and Dreamtime stories.
- Desert wildlife – Keep an eye out for rock wallabies, perentie lizards, and a variety of birds, including the striking zebra finch and spinifex pigeon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to Watarrka, arriving early to tackle the Rim Walk before the heat intensifies (start before 8 am in summer). If you're short on time, the Kings Creek Walk can be done in an hour. For a deeper experience, camp overnight at the Kings Canyon Resort or stay in one of the nearby lodges; this also allows for a sunrise walk or a sunset drive through the park. Two days is ideal if you want to explore the Giles Track, a 22-kilometre multi-day walk.
