Nitmiluk National Park, carved by the ancient Katherine River, is a breathtaking landscape of towering sandstone gorges, plunging waterfalls, and lush pockets of monsoon forest. Just a 30-minute drive from Katherine and about three hours south of Darwin, this park is a must for anyone exploring Australia's Top End. Here, you'll swim in natural plunge pools, cruise between sheer cliff walls, and walk through country that has been home to the Jawoyn people for tens of thousands of years.
Highlights & What to See
- Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk Gorge): The centrepiece of the park, this series of 13 gorges is best explored by canoe, cruise, or kayak. Paddle through the still waters between towering cliffs, and keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles basking on the rocks. For a bird's-eye view, take a scenic helicopter flight over the entire gorge system.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls): A stunning waterfall and natural swimming hole with a series of cascading pools. The short walk to the upper pool rewards with cool, clear water and views over the surrounding escarpment. Perfect for a refreshing dip after a long drive.
- Jawoyn Rock Art Sites: Scattered throughout the park are ancient rock art galleries, including the well-known Nabilil and Nawulandja sites. Join a guided tour to learn about the Dreamtime stories and cultural significance behind the ochre paintings.
- Jatbula Trail: One of Australia's great multi-day walks, this 58 km trek from the gorge to Edith Falls takes five days and passes through monsoon forests, past waterfalls, and across rocky escarpments. Book well in advance.
- Baruwei Lookout Loop: A short, steep walk to a lookout offering sweeping views of the gorge and the distant Arnhem Land escarpment. Best at sunrise or sunset for the changing colours of the sandstone.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring the park, which allows for a morning gorge cruise and an afternoon swim at Edith Falls. If you're short on time, a half-day can still cover a short walk and a dip at Leliyn. For hikers and those wanting to fully immerse themselves, allow two to three days to tackle part of the Jatbula Trail or to canoe through multiple gorges. The park is best visited during the dry season (May to October) when the weather is mild and water levels are safe for swimming.
