Katherine Gorge

Katherine Gorge, the dramatic centrepiece of Nitmiluk National Park, is a sequence of thirteen sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River over millions of years. Just a 30-minute drive from Katherine town, this is a place where sheer cliffs rise from deep, dark water, and the only soundtrack is the splash of a paddle or the call of a bird. It’s a must-do for anyone venturing into the Top End, offering a raw, ancient landscape that feels both humbling and exhilarating.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day at Katherine Gorge: a morning cruise or canoe trip followed by a short walk to a lookout (like the Baruwei Loop, 20 minutes return). If you’re short on time, a half-day (3–4 hours) is enough for a cruise and a quick view. For hikers and paddlers, allocate two to three days to explore the Jatbula Trail or a multi-day canoe expedition. The best time to visit is the dry season (May to September) when the river is calm and the weather is pleasant.
