Katherine Gorge, the dramatic centrepiece of Nitmiluk National Park, is a sequence of thirteen sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River over millions of years. Just a 30-minute drive from Katherine town, this is a place where sheer cliffs rise from deep, dark water, and the only soundtrack is the splash of a paddle or the call of a bird. It’s a must-do for anyone venturing into the Top End, offering a raw, ancient landscape that feels both humbling and exhilarating.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise: The classic way to experience the gorge. A two-hour guided boat tour takes you through the first two gorges, with Indigenous stories and geology insights. Opt for the longer three-gorge cruise for extra wilderness.
- Canoeing & Kayaking: Rent a canoe and paddle the still waters yourself. You’ll glide past towering cliffs and spot freshwater crocodiles basking on rocks. Multiple-day trips allow you to camp on sandbars deep in the gorge.
- Jatbula Trail: One of Australia’s great multi-day walks, this 58 km trek follows the Katherine River from the gorge to Leliyn (Edith Falls). It passes waterfalls, monsoon forests, and rock art sites – book well in advance.
- Scenic Flights: See the full scale of the gorge system from above. A 20-minute helicopter or light plane flight reveals the intricate pattern of gorges and the vast escarpment.
- Swimming at Leliyn (Edith Falls): A 45-minute drive north, these cascading falls plunge into a deep, croc-free pool – the perfect spot to cool off after a hike.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day at Katherine Gorge: a morning cruise or canoe trip followed by a short walk to a lookout (like the Baruwei Loop, 20 minutes return). If you’re short on time, a half-day (3–4 hours) is enough for a cruise and a quick view. For hikers and paddlers, allocate two to three days to explore the Jatbula Trail or a multi-day canoe expedition. The best time to visit is the dry season (May to September) when the river is calm and the weather is pleasant.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katherine Town: The gateway hub, with the Katherine Outback Experience (stockman show) and the Katherine Museum – worth a half-day stop for supplies and history.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls): A stunning detour 45 km north of Katherine, with a large swimming hole and a short hike to the upper falls. Combine with a gorge visit for a full day.
- Mataranka Thermal Pools: About 100 km south of Katherine, these crystal-clear, 34°C spring-fed pools are surrounded by palm forest – a soothing stop on the way to or from Alice Springs.
- Nitmiluk National Park (other areas): Explore the park’s lesser-known gorges, such as 17 Mile Valley, or walk the Windolf Trail for panoramic views.
- Darwin: A 3-hour drive north, Darwin offers markets, museums, and the jumping-off point for Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks – a natural start or end to a Top End itinerary.
- Mindil Beach: In Darwin, this iconic sunset market (Thurs & Sun evenings) is the perfect place to enjoy local food and crafts after your outback adventure.
