Casuarina Beach is a long, sandy stretch on Darwin's northern outskirts, beloved by locals for its relaxed vibe and excellent swimming conditions (when the stinger nets are up). It offers a genuine slice of Top End life without the crowds of Mindil Beach.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the patrolled area – The beach is patrolled year-round, and during the dry season (May–October) stinger nets provide safe swimming. The water is warm and clear, perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Walk or jog the shoreline – At low tide the firm sand stretches for kilometres, ideal for a sunrise or sunset stroll. Look out for the distinctive casuarina trees that fringe the dunes.
- Picnic under the casuarinas – Shaded tables and BBQs near the car park make it easy to settle in for a lazy afternoon. Pack a picnic and watch the kite surfers dance on the breeze.
- Spot local wildlife – Keep an eye out for sea eagles, brahminy kites, and the occasional dolphin pod offshore. The dunes are also home to monitor lizards.
- Explore the Casuarina Coastal Reserve – The beach is part of this protected area, which includes walking trails through monsoon forest and mangroves, plus a historic World War II gun emplacement at Charles Point.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day here – a morning swim followed by a picnic lunch, or an afternoon walk and sunset. If you're keen to explore the coastal reserve trails, allow a full day. The beach is also a great quick stop (1–2 hours) on a drive around the Darwin outskirts. Avoid midday heat from October to March.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Mindil Beach Sunset Market – Darwin's iconic market (Thursday & Sunday evenings during dry season) is a 15-minute drive south. Grab dinner and watch the sunset over the sea.
- Darwin Waterfront Precinct – The wave lagoon and restaurants are a short drive away, perfect for a family day out or a cool-off after the beach.
- East Point Reserve – This large park offers walking trails, a military museum, and a swimming lagoon. Combine with Casuarina for a full day of outdoors.
- Litchfield National Park – About 1.5 hours south, it's a must-do day trip from Darwin, with waterfalls, swimming holes, and termite mounds.
- Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve – An hour east, this wetland is a birdwatcher's paradise, especially during the wet season.
