Stretching along Darwin's northern coastline, Casuarina Coastal Reserve is a wild and beautiful slice of Top End nature where monsoon forests meet sandy beaches and the Timor Sea. The reserve is a haven for birdwatchers, swimmers, and those seeking a peaceful escape from the city — but always keep an eye out for saltwater crocodiles and heed warning signs.
Highlights & What to See
- Casuarina Beach – a long, sandy beach perfect for a refreshing dip in the ocean (between the flags during patrolled hours) and sunset strolls.
- Monsoon Forest Walk – a short, shaded boardwalk through dense coastal monsoon forest, where you might spot fruit bats, birds, and even wallabies.
- Buffalo Creek – a tidal creek at the reserve's eastern end, excellent for birdwatching, especially during the dry season when waterbirds congregate.
- Rapid Creek – on the western side, this creek mouth is a popular fishing spot and a great place to watch the sun sink into the sea.
- Dripstone Cliffs – low sandstone cliffs along the coast, offering panoramic views and a glimpse of the region's geological history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty to explore the reserve. Arrive in the late afternoon to enjoy the beach, walk the monsoon forest trail, and then settle in for sunset — the light over the ocean is spectacular. If you're keen on birdwatching, come early morning instead.
