While the name might suggest a single property, the Ayers Rock Resort is the entire accommodation and hospitality hub for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Located in the town of Yulara, this purpose-built oasis offers a range of lodgings from campgrounds to luxury hotels, along with restaurants, galleries, and a central square. It's your basecamp for exploring the monumental red centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Field of Light – Bruce Munro's mesmerising installation of 50,000 solar-powered spheres illuminates the desert at dusk; book ahead for a guided walk among the glowing stems.
- Wintjiri Arts & Museum – A contemporary gallery showcasing works by local Anangu artists and storytelling through light and sound installations.
- Sunset Viewing at the Resort – Several spots around the complex offer stunning views of Uluru changing colour, often with fewer crowds than the park's official sunset strip.
- Desert Awakenings Tour – A guided outback walk from the resort that shares Indigenous plant uses and bush tucker, followed by a champagne breakfast.
- Walpa Gorge Walk – A short, easy trail into the domes of Kata Tjuta, starting from the resort’s shuttle drop-off point.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves here for 2–3 nights to fully experience Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and the cultural sites. Arrive early on day one to catch a sunset, dedicate a full day to the national park (including the Base Walk and Kata Tjuta), and use the final morning for the Field of Light or a helicopter flight. The resort itself can be explored in an hour or two, but its amenities are best enjoyed as a relaxing evening retreat after long days out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru – The iconic monolith is a 20-minute drive from the resort; walk the 10.6 km base trail or take a ranger-guided Mala Walk.
- Kata Tjuta – The Olgas, a group of 36 domes, offer the dramatic Valley of the Winds hike (7.4 km, moderate).
- Kings Canyon – A 3-hour drive via the Red Centre Way; the Rim Walk (6 km) is a must for dramatic cliff views.
- Alice Springs – A 4.5-hour drive north, this outback hub provides a contrast in culture and the start of many Red Centre itineraries.
