Hahndorf

Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, feels like a slice of Bavaria dropped into the Adelaide Hills. Founded by Lutheran refugees in 1839, this charming village is a riot of half-timbered buildings, artisan bakeries, and craft breweries. The main street is lined with chestnut trees, and the air smells of strudel, sauerkraut, and roasted coffee. It’s an easy day trip from Adelaide, but stays overnight to soak up the cosy pub atmosphere and explore the surrounding hills.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the main street, but to truly appreciate the area, plan for a full day. Arrive by mid-morning to browse shops before lunch, then visit a winery or The Cedars in the afternoon. If you’re combining with the Adelaide Hills, allow two days to also explore nearby Mount Lofty and Cleland Wildlife Park.
