Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, feels like a slice of Bavaria dropped into the Adelaide Hills. Founded by Lutheran refugees in 1839, this charming village is a riot of half-timbered buildings, artisan bakeries, and craft breweries. The main street is lined with chestnut trees, and the air smells of strudel, sauerkraut, and roasted coffee. It’s an easy day trip from Adelaide, but stays overnight to soak up the cosy pub atmosphere and explore the surrounding hills.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Street Stroll: Wander past galleries, German delicatessens, and the Hahndorf Inn for a stein of beer and pork knuckle. Don’t miss the Hahndorf Farm Barn for animal encounters.
- The Cedars: The former home of Australian impressionist Sir Hans Heysen, with a studio, gallery, and beautiful gardens. A must for art lovers.
- Hahndorf Hill Winery: Taste cool-climate wines, especially Grüner Veltliner and Blaufränkisch, at this boutique cellar door with vineyard views.
- Beerenberg Farm: Pick your own strawberries in season and stock up on jams, chutneys, and sauces at the farm shop.
- Hahndorf Academy & Heritage Museum: Housed in a historic building, it tells the story of the German settlers and their impact on the region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the main street, but to truly appreciate the area, plan for a full day. Arrive by mid-morning to browse shops before lunch, then visit a winery or The Cedars in the afternoon. If you’re combining with the Adelaide Hills, allow two days to also explore nearby Mount Lofty and Cleland Wildlife Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Cleland Wildlife Park: Get up close with kangaroos, koalas, and emus in a natural bush setting, just 20 minutes away.

- Barossa Valley: A 40-minute drive north takes you to world-class wineries and gourmet food.
- McLaren Vale: Another top wine region, about an hour southwest, known for shiraz and cellar door experiences.
