Alice Springs Telegraph Station

Just 4 km north of Alice Springs, the Alice Springs Telegraph Station is where the town began. Set beside the Todd River, this historic reserve preserves the stone buildings of the Overland Telegraph Line, completed in 1872. It’s a fascinating window into the outback’s pioneering communications era, with whitewashed walls, shady verandahs, and a palpable sense of isolation.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 2 hours to tour the buildings and wander the grounds. Combine with a picnic (tables and gas barbecues are available) or a short bushwalk. The site is most pleasant in the morning or late afternoon when the light softens the stone facades.
