Just 4 km north of Alice Springs, the Alice Springs Telegraph Station is where the town began. Set beside the Todd River, this historic reserve preserves the stone buildings of the Overland Telegraph Line, completed in 1872. It’s a fascinating window into the outback’s pioneering communications era, with whitewashed walls, shady verandahs, and a palpable sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Buildings: Wander through the restored telegraph station, post office, and living quarters, furnished with period pieces that evoke life in the 1870s.
- Interpretive Displays: Learn how the telegraph line linked Australia to the world, reducing communication from months to hours.
- Trails and River Walks: Follow short walking trails along the Todd River and through spinifex country; keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies.
- Bush Tucker Garden: See native plants used by the Arrernte people for food and medicine, with informative signage.
- Alice Springs Heritage Trail: The station is a key stop on this self-guided drive through the town’s historic sites.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 2 hours to tour the buildings and wander the grounds. Combine with a picnic (tables and gas barbecues are available) or a short bushwalk. The site is most pleasant in the morning or late afternoon when the light softens the stone facades.
