Yulara is the purpose-built resort town that serves as the gateway to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. More than just a place to sleep, it offers a comfortable base with a range of accommodations, dining, and cultural experiences, all while respecting the deep spiritual significance of the surrounding landscape. The town's design keeps the iconic monoliths out of sight until you venture into the park, preserving the magic of that first glimpse.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru (Ayers Rock): The world's most famous monolith is an awe-inspiring sight at sunrise and sunset, when its colours shift from ochre to deep purple. Walk the base or take a guided tour to learn about its sacred stories.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas): A striking group of 36 domed rock formations, best explored on the Valley of the Winds walk, which offers dramatic views and a sense of profound stillness.
- Field of Light: Bruce Munro's stunning installation of thousands of glowing spheres comes alive at dusk, creating a dreamlike landscape that blends art with the desert night.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre: A great place to gain insight into Anangu culture, with art displays, storytelling, and information about the park's significance.
- Wintjiri Arts + Museum: In Yulara itself, this centre showcases contemporary Indigenous art and offers a deeper understanding of local traditions.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days (three nights) to experience the highlights without rush. Dedicate one day to Uluru (sunrise, base walk, cultural centre) and another to Kata Tjuta (Valley of the Winds walk, sunset). An extra night allows for the Field of Light and a more relaxed pace. If you're self-driving from Alice Springs, build in two days for the journey each way.
