Welcome to Tennant Creek, a rugged outback town that punches well above its weight in history, character, and raw desert beauty. Once the site of Australia's last gold rush, today it's a welcoming stop on the Stuart Highway, offering a genuine slice of Territory life. Here, you'll find ancient Aboriginal rock art, fascinating mining heritage, and wide-open landscapes that feel truly remote.
Highlights & What to See
- Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre – A striking, award-winning cultural centre that tells the stories of the Warumungu people through art, artefacts, and interactive exhibits. The building itself is a work of art.
- Battery Hill Mining Centre – Explore the historic gold battery, walk through a replica underground mine, and try your luck panning for gold. The views from the hill are superb.
- Devil's Marbles (Karlu Karlu) – Just 100 km south, this sacred site is a must-see: giant, rounded boulders scattered across a valley, especially magical at sunrise or sunset.
- Lake Mary Ann – A peaceful freshwater lake right in town, perfect for a picnic or a short stroll. Birdlife is abundant, and it's a great spot to cool off.
- Kunjarra (The Pebbles) – Two large granite tors rising from the plains, significant to the Warumungu people. A short walk leads to panoramic views.
