Newcastle Waters is a historic outpost on the Stuart Highway, 630 km north of Alice Springs. Once a vital droving and railhead town, today it's a quiet, atmospheric stop where the vast red plains meet the deep blue skies of the Northern Territory. The settlement’s handful of preserved buildings and the nearby wetlands offer a glimpse into the region's pastoral and Indigenous heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Newcastle Waters Historic Precinct: Wander the cluster of restored buildings including the Junction Hotel, the police station and the old store – all dating from the early 1900s and evoking the era of overland cattle drives.
- Newcastle Waters Wetlands: A surprising oasis of permanent waterholes fringed with paperbarks and pandanus, attracting abundant birdlife. Bring binoculars for brolgas, black swans and waterfowl.
- Newcastle Waters Station: One of Australia's largest cattle stations (over 10,000 km²). The homestead is not open to the public, but you can appreciate its scale from the road.
- Drovers Camp: The historic stockyards and camp site where drovers rested their cattle on the long trek to market. Interpretive signs tell the story of the legendary 'overlanders'.
- Stuart Highway Stop: A classic roadhouse with fuel, basic supplies and a cold drink – a welcome break on the long drive between Alice Springs and Darwin.
Suggested Time to Spend
Newcastle Waters is best as a short stop of 1–2 hours to explore the historic precinct and stretch your legs. If you're a birdwatcher or keen photographer, allow an extra hour to walk the wetlands. Most travellers pass through on a day's drive between Alice Springs (7 hours south) and Katherine (3 hours north) – it's an ideal lunch or coffee break.
