The Red Centre Way is the ultimate outback road trip, a 450 km loop from Alice Springs that delivers the raw, ancient heart of Australia. This is a landscape of colossal monoliths, gaping chasms, and desert oak forests, where the silence is profound and the stars blaze at night. The sealed road makes it accessible to any vehicle, but the real magic lies in stopping often, walking the gorges, and absorbing the timeless presence of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru (Ayers Rock) – The world’s most famous monolith. Walk the base (10.6 km) for up-close colour changes, or catch sunrise from the Talinguru Nyakunytjaku viewing platform. Don’t miss the cultural centre for Anangu perspectives.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – A cluster of 36 domed rock formations. The Walpa Gorge walk (2.6 km return) is gentle; the Valley of the Winds (7.4 km loop) is a strenuous but breathtaking scramble through the domes.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A 270-metre-deep canyon with sheer sandstone walls. The Rim Walk (6 km, 3-4 hours) is the standout, offering views of the ‘Lost City’ and Garden of Eden waterhole.
- West MacDonnell Ranges – A chain of gorges and waterholes west of Alice Springs. Standouts include Simpsons Gap (short walk, wallabies at dusk), Standley Chasm (narrow gorge, best at noon), and Ormiston Gorge (swimming and a 7.5 km Pound Walk).
- Tylers Pass Lookout – A panoramic stop on the Mereenie Loop Road with sweeping views over the red desert and distant ranges.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least 3-4 days for the full loop. A classic itinerary: Day 1 – Alice Springs to Kings Canyon (via West MacDonnells stops), Day 2 – Kings Canyon Rim Walk then drive to Yulara (Uluru), Day 3 – Uluru sunrise, base walk, and Kata Tjuta, Day 4 – return to Alice Springs via the Stuart Highway. If you have more time, add a night at Glen Helen Resort or a side trip to Palm Valley in Finke Gorge National Park.
