Ormiston Gorge and Pound is a stunning natural amphitheatre in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 130 km west of Alice Springs. This water-carved gorge and its surrounding quartzite walls offer some of the most dramatic scenery in the Red Centre. The permanent waterhole is a lifeline for wildlife and a refreshing spot for a swim after a hike. With well-marked trails and a rich Aboriginal cultural heritage, it's a must-visit for anyone exploring the region.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A 7.5 km circuit that takes you through the heart of the pound, with towering red cliffs and spinifex-covered slopes. The full loop offers panoramic views and a chance to spot rock wallabies.
- Ghost Gum Walk – A shorter, 1.5 km walk along the creek to a picturesque ghost gum and the waterhole. Ideal for families or a quick visit.
- Permanent Waterhole – A beautiful, deep pool surrounded by red rocks. Perfect for a cooling dip on a hot day; the water is usually clear and inviting.
- Aboriginal Rock Art – Look for ancient carvings and paintings on the gorge walls, telling stories of the Arrernte people who have lived here for thousands of years.
- Wildlife Watching – Keep an eye out for black-footed rock wallabies, euros (hill kangaroos), and a variety of birds including the rare black-breasted buzzard.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (3–4 hours) here, which is enough time to complete the Ghost Gum Walk and part of the Pound Walk. If you want to hike the full Ormiston Pound circuit, allow 4–5 hours. For a relaxed visit with swimming and photography, plan for a full day. The gorge is at its best in the early morning or late afternoon when the light paints the cliffs in deep ochre.
