Ellers Creek
Ellers Creek is a serene waterhole and picnic spot nestled in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 85 km west of Alice Springs. It's a favourite among locals for its tranquil pools, shaded river red gums, and the chance to spot wildlife like black-footed rock-wallabies. The drive out is an adventure in itself, with the rugged beauty of the ranges unfolding around every bend.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming at the waterhole – Cool off in the clear, permanent waterhole surrounded by ochre cliffs. It's one of the best spots for a dip in the region.
- Short walk to the gorge – A 15-minute stroll from the car park leads to a narrow gorge where the creek pools, offering dramatic views and a sense of isolation.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for rock-wallabies, birds like the spinifex pigeon, and if you're lucky, a peregrine falcon overhead.
- Picnicking under red gums – Shaded tables and fireplaces make this a perfect lunch stop. Pack a picnic and enjoy the quiet.
- Sunset colours on the cliffs – The sandstone bluffs glow deep orange and red as the sun sinks, making for stunning photos.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here – enough for a swim, a short walk, and a picnic. If you're keen to explore further, combine it with a longer day trip along the Larapinta Drive, visiting other West MacDonnell sites like Standley Chasm or Ormiston Gorge. An early start is recommended to beat the heat and crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Standley Chasm – A spectacular narrow chasm with vertical walls, best visited around midday when sunlight illuminates the red rock.
- Ormiston Gorge – A larger waterhole and network of walks, including the challenging Ormiston Pound Walk (a half-day circuit).
- Glen Helen Gorge – A permanent waterhole at the foot of Mount Sonder, with a lodge and campground nearby.
- Simpsons Gap – A scenic gap closer to town, with a short walk and resident black-footed rock-wallabies.
- Alice Springs Desert Park – An excellent introduction to the region's flora and fauna, with nocturnal house and free-flight bird show.
