In the heart of the Red Centre, the Alice Springs Reptile Centre offers an intimate encounter with Australia’s most iconic – and often misunderstood – reptiles. This small but expertly curated centre lets you get nose-to-snout with perentie goannas, thorny devils, and a host of venomous snakes, all in a cool, shaded oasis that’s a welcome break from the desert heat. The passionate keepers deliver engaging talks throughout the day, and you can even hold a python or pat a blue-tongue lizard.
Highlights & What to See
- Territory’s biggest reptile display – see massive saltwater and freshwater crocodiles, including a 3-metre-plus ‘salty’ named Terry.
- Free-handling sessions – daily opportunities to hold a python or stroke a bearded dragon; the staff explain each species’ behaviour and habitat.
- Night-time tours (seasonal) – spot nocturnal geckos, pythons, and the elusive pygmy mulga snake under UV light.
- Thorny devil exhibit – watch these spiky little dragons drink water from their own skin in a specially designed display.
- Interactive keeper talks – learn how reptiles survive the harsh Outback, from burrowing to venom extraction.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–1.5 hours here, which is plenty of time to catch a couple of keeper talks, handle a snake, and explore the indoor and outdoor enclosures. If you’re on a self-drive itinerary, it’s an easy morning or afternoon stop that fits well with a trip to the Alice Springs Desert Park or a walk along the Todd River. For families, the hands-on experiences make it a highlight that kids will talk about for days.
