The Todd River Walk is a flat, easy 5 km loop that traces the sandy bed of the usually dry Todd River through the heart of Alice Springs. Despite its name, the river is often a broad, dusty corridor of river red gums and ghost gums, but after rare rains it can transform into a flowing waterway. This walk offers a unique perspective on the town, connecting key landmarks and providing a peaceful escape under the shade of ancient trees.
Highlights & What to See
- Anzac Hill – Start or finish at this iconic lookout for panoramic views over Alice Springs and the MacDonnell Ranges.
- John Flynn’s Grave – A historic site dedicated to the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, set in a quiet memorial precinct.
- Olive Pink Botanic Garden – A detour off the walk leads to this arid-zone garden showcasing native plants and birdlife.
- River red gums and birdwatching – The riverine environment attracts corellas, galahs, and budgerigars; keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies near the cliffs.
- Public art and sculptures – Several pieces dot the route, including the impressive Yeperenye Caterpillar sculpture at the town centre end.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to complete the full loop at a leisurely pace, including stops for photos and interpretation signs. The walk is best done in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat, especially from October to March. It’s a perfect appetiser for a longer stay in Alice Springs — combine it with a visit to the nearby Alice Springs Desert Park or a sunset tour of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
